Abstract

This article asserts that there is a singularity of sense in the use of the name “América Latina” by Francisco Bilbao. The theses proposed by J. Phelan, A. Ardao, M.Rrojas Mix, P. Estrade, M. Quijada, V. Romero y W. Mignolo are reviewed and discussed regarding new unpublished documentation. At the same time, it shows the difficult position of the name in the geopolitics context of rival imperialisms of XIX century, in which Francisco Bilbao took part, between its first use in 1856 until its denial in 1862.
